Orange Ginger Pucker Cookies

A perfect swirl of sweet and sour.


These magical swirl cookies are not your normal cookies. These cookies come with a trick. They have a sour rim of icing and a sweet center. They are a perfect treat for any witch to wizard, and perfect trick for any mortal.



 

Recipe:

16 tablespoons unsalted butter (Softened)

3/4 cups Granulated Sugar

1/2 cup Confectioners Sugar

1/2 teaspoon Salt

2 egg yolks (save whites)

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon Orange extract

Orange zest (one orange)

Orange gel food dye

Purple food dye

1 1/2 teaspoons ground ginger


Sour Icing

2 Egg whites

Confectioners Sugar

Red gel food dye

1 teaspoon Citric Acid


-In a large bowl, mix together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

-Mix in the egg yolks, vanilla, salt and flour until a smooth dough forms.

-Cut the dough into two halves.

- In a bowl add orange zest, orange extract and food dye to one half of the dough, working it in until evenly mixed. Wrap when finished.

-Flavor and color the other half with purple food dye and ground ginger. Mix and wrap when finished.

- Refrigerate for 10-15 minutes.

-On a large cutting board sandwich together orange dough between two pieces of parchment paper. With a rolling pin, roll out each piece of dough to make two 8 x 10 rectangle slabs. One purple and one orange.

-Take the orange slab of dough and place it on top of the purple slab of dough. Use the parchment paper under the purple slab of dough to help you roll them into log.

-Place the log in the refrigerator to chill for 1 hour.

- Cut the dough into ¼-inch (6-mm) slices and place them on a cookie sheet.

- Bake for 10- 12 minutes at 325° f

-For the icing, Whisk the egg whites until frothy. Add the powdered sugar and citric acid. Whisk for 3 minutes until shiny. Add the red food dye and mix for 2 more minutes. Decorate the rim of cookie.

-Allow icing to dry and harden for about 20-30 minutes.

AND BAM! PERFECT ORANGE GINGER PUCKER COOKIES!!!


NOTES

*To get a good round cookie, Place two large drinking glasses on either side of the dough log while refrigerating. Lay it flat in the refrigerator.

*The sour icing is optional.
